12 terms
- Apoptosis
- Programmed cell death; one process by which cells are removed in a regulated manner.
- ATP
- Adenosine triphosphate, a molecule used to transfer energy for many cellular processes.
- Cell-cycle checkpoint
- A control mechanism that checks whether a cell is ready to advance to the next cell-cycle stage.
- HL-60
- A human leukemia-derived cell line used in laboratory research. This lab replays one published cell-count series, not patient outcomes.
- Immune checkpoint
- A regulatory pathway that helps control immune responses. It is not the same as a cell-cycle checkpoint.
- Ligand
- A molecule that binds to a receptor or another specific binding partner.
- Lysosome
- Break down macromolecules and recycle cellular material.
- Mitochondrion
- Generate much of the ATP during aerobic cellular respiration.
- Mitosis
- Division of a eukaryotic nucleus, separating duplicated chromosomes into daughter nuclei.
- Nucleus
- Contains most cellular DNA and helps regulate gene expression.
- Receptor
- A protein that binds a specific ligand. Cell-surface receptors can relay signals from outside to inside a cell.
- Ribosome
- Translate messenger RNA into proteins.
