Cancer & immune checkpoints

Cancer cells can lose normal controls on division and death. Immune checkpoints regulate immune responses. PD-L1 binding to PD-1 on T cells can deliver an inhibitory signal. Checkpoint inhibitors can interrupt this signaling in appropriate clinical settings, but not every tumor responds and immune-related adverse effects can occur. This mechanism is distinct from CAR antigen recognition.
